The Daily Neopets Guideline Changes

Hello everybody,

In case you haven't noticed yet, we have changed a majority of our forums' guidelines. The most major guidelines that have been changed are the main Forum Rules. We've simplified them a lot and have made them easier to follow.

A majority of forum-specific guidelines have also been changed and simplified. Be sure to read over these topics again at your earliest convenience.

The Daily Neopets Forums have gotten an upgrade!

Hello everybody!

TDN Forums have gotten a massive upgrade. We've upgraded to Invision Power Board 3.2. You'll notice that TDN Forums has an entirely new style (although the same theme). We're really excited about this release! Some major things that have been updated are:

New rich text editor
Instant quick reply
Forum profiles
Forum and topic views
Improved account controls

New features include:

Autosave draft in editor
"Like" reputation
Tagging
And more...

One of the biggest changes is that the concept of avatars has been phased out. Avatars are now referred to as profile pictures. Due to this change, all profile pictures and avatars have been deleted or reset. Also with this change: TDN Forum's "Personal Photo" policy has been entirely phased out. Profile pictures should be treated much like social media sites like Facebook and Twitter; keep them entirely appropriate like you would anywhere else.

A Few Reminders

Hello all!

Recently we've had a fair number of people backseat modding on various threads. Backseat modding is when a user tells another user that they've broken the rules. This is the moderators' job, and backseat modding is considered off topic. If you see that someone has broken the rules, simply report the post with the Report button located on the lower left of all posts, and allow the moderators to handle it. Of course, if someone posts asking about a specific rule, you are free to help explain it. Beyond that, however, please leave the modding to the mods!

Also, there have been several boards posted that we have general threads for. The two most common are Turmaculus Alert threads and Faerie Quest Help threads. Our Turmy board is located in the Neopets Dailies section, a subforum of Neopets General Chat, and the Faerie Quest board is a pinned topic in the Neopets Help section. Please post all related alerts and help requests on the proper boards. This helps keep our forums clean and makes it eaiser for anyone who wishes to visit Turmy or help with a Quest, as they have a specific topic to follow for updates.

April Fools! TheDailyNeopets is NOT becoming TheDailyPinata, Ian has not formed an alliance with the pinatas, and the main site has been restored to it's normal state. If you like the pinata theme it is still available for use via your myTDN account.

In addition, there were no permissions errors earlier today. The Staff Chat that was made visible was a fake, the product of several months of work. Some of it is real, and some of it is (most likely) fake. It is still visible in the archives if you wish to determine what the false information was.

TDN Security Updates

Hello,

Over the past couple of days, a number of users have been receiving malware warnings for visiting The Daily Neopets and TDN Forums. On Monday, March 7, our data center's web-based support center was compromised. Our data center's support center contained a number of unencrypted root passwords to servers that they manage. TDN was one of them. The hacker proceeded to log in to TDN's server and modify some system files that dynamically injected malicious javascript tags into some of our pages. This code, at random times (not to be too suspicious), initiated malware downloads on users' computers.

Since this discovery, our data center has erased their entire support center's database (including the root passwords to servers) and released patches to all of their servers, fixing the affected system files. TDN and TDN Forums have been cleared of all "malware blacklists" at Google, Firefox, Opera, and many others. TDN and TDN Forums are malware free.

If you have visited TDN or TDN Forums between March 7 through March 10, it is strongly recommended that you change your myTDN, TDN Forums, and Neopets password immediately.

If you visited TDN or TDN Forums between March 7 through March 10, do not assume that your computer has been infected with malware. You know that your computer has been infected if you physically saw a download window pop up on your computer and you couldn't stop it. If you received browser warnings or antivirus warnings from visiting TDN, there is a high chance that these programs caught the malware before it was ever able to download or install. In general, you can't get malware from simply loading a page; the program has to download and execute, which you would be able to see.

Lastly: based on the evidence we have, the hacker was not a Neopets player or interested in Neopets accounts. Multiple servers in our data center were affected by this; each server hosted diverse types of web sites.

TDN is safe and here to stay!

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Our server is now stable and we have taken extra steps to apply even stricter security settings to our server and to TDN and TDN Forums. We are happy to answer any questions you might have.

TDN's Daily Dare Staff Tournament!

This is Co! And let me be the first to welcome you to the home of TDN's Daily Dare Staff Tournament 2011!

During the course of the Dare Dare, staff members will not only compete for the top trophy, but the highest points in each games. There will be Daily News Updates from our referees, Co, AA, and Livvy. There are 17 staffers competing, including Daring Dante, Insane Ian, The Reaper of Null, and more. A Voting System has also been created, allowing you to vote on which staffers you think will place where. After that, you can see how you compare to the community on the Results Page.

This event also has a Special Forum where you can talk about your predictions, comment on news updates, and root for your favorite staffers, also, don't forget to find out more information about the competing staffers on the Staffer Profile Page!

AAA looms on the horizon, but which of our staffers can rise the furthest above his challenge, and claim the throne of King or Queen of games? Well, there's only one way to find out, let the tournament... begin!

Neo Avatars Updates: Avatar Stats

In case you didn't see this on Neo Avatars...

We've just finished up testing a brand new Avatar Stats feature at Neo Avatars. We've taken the data from our now 5,000,000 checked avatars and calculated each avatar's rarity off this data.

The Avatar Stats page only displays the top 50 commonest and rarest avatars, but each avatar's rarity is displayed on the respective in-depth avatar solution page now.
