How to use VPNs + Netflix

Recommended Posts

First of all, I know Netflix has been accused of banning users that use VPNs, but I'm experiencing a free-month trial, so I though "What the hey".

Sooo, I'm a n00b at this. I'd really like to learn how VPNs work, so I wonder if you guys could help me! What are VPNs about? Is a VPN a program you have to install? Are there free options? Can I choose when/with which sites it's gonna be used? For example, I'd like to try one with Netflix so I can watch stuff that's not available in my country, but I'd never ever want it to be active while I use Neopets.

Is it too complex? Do I stand a chance? Thank you, and please forgive my n00bness! :)

I don't really understand VPNs, but I used a chrome extension called "Media Hint" to watch Netflix. You could enable/disable it whenever you wanted to. However, Media Hint isn't free anymore, but there's still a way around that. You can still download the old version and it will work, but every time you open your browser it won't let you enable the extension, so you'll have to remove and re-install it (it's not that much work, actually, you just have to drag and drop the file into the extensions' page). I don't know if I'm allowed to post the file here, so if you want it I can send it to you in private (or perhaps someone here will have an easier solution).

I stopped using the extension because I've been on Netflix ever since it became available in Brazil, so I've already invested too much to risk my account!

PS: I believe I've played Neopets with the extension enabled. Never thought something bad could happen :whaa:

Don't use a VPN, use Hola. I know loads of people who use it and have never had any issue with it on Netflix.

Using a VPN isn't hard, but Hola is a lot simpler to use and you can decide which sites use it and which don't with only a few clicks.

Though if you want me to answer each question in turn about VPNs:

What are VPNs about? They're 'virtual private networks'. A lot of people prefer using it cause of the privacy it afford on the internet. Is a VPN a program you have to install? Nope, it's set up using inherent controls in your OS. Are there free options? Well, yes? See previous answer. Can I choose when/with which sites it's gonna be used? Yes.

Thank you for the help, guys!

Shane for Wax, I've just installed Hola, thank you so much for the tip! Now, I've unlocked Netflix on Hola's page, or at least so it says. But my Netflix page is showing up just the same way as it was before. Do I have to do something?

UPDATE: nevermind, just found out how to select the country! Netflix USA is MAAAAH-VELOUS! <3 <3 <3

My original draft had answered that but I figured there would be no reason to mention it given it's complicated. They detect that Hola is saying you're in a certain part of the world, but not that you're spoofing (if that makes sense). Most people I know use Hola and have never had netflix say boo about it. I have not used it yet, given I like to watch netflix on my PS3 instead.

But won't it, like Neopets, find it weird if I keep on switching from country to country in a small span of time? Should I be careful with that?

I'm glad you did it! I almost cried when I accessed Netflix USA for the first time, lol. I was so overwhelmed with the options.

Are you familiar with http://www.allflicks.net/? It's pretty handy for deciding what to watch on Netflix.

Have fun and good luck!

Then don't tell Hola to be active on Neopets. Like I said to someone about VPN on Neopets, just be aware they might be worried someone is accessing your account if you do consistently keep forgetting to turn things back to vanilla before visiting a site.

No, that's not what I mean. I don't intent to use it on Neopets. I mean that I wonder if NETFLIX can notice the constant changing and find it weird, since it'd be phisically impossible for my user to be active in Brazil one minute, then the US the following minute.

Hn. I misread then. But what I said still applies regardless. lol I mean it's possible they might send you an email about it since some websites do that when they notice you've been logged in in a different location than usual (which probably sucks a lot for military people, I was out of the military before the internet really took off like it has). But Netflix has also made it to where you can have multiple people on the same account and they've never messaged me about having someone in Florida accessing netflix or anything like that.

But other than that, they probably don't entirely care unless something big happens like a credit card change or something.
