If you'll be replaying levels, I recommend level 2.  Guaranteed 3 stars every time, and it doesn't have a tutorial/guide slowing the level down.

I would absolutely recommend training that one last level to get to the ninja school. You're so close and it will save you a ton of time and nps. Your stats aren't really that far apart (your hp is the only real outlier, and it's still less than 2x your level). So just even out your strength and defense (at the ninja school where it only takes 4 hours and costs only 1 red codestone) and you'll be good to go. Good luck!

I secretly wish they'd get rid of this event altogether, but (for whatever reason) tons of people love the AC and thus it increases the website's traffic, so it's a necessary evil 

Man..... I LOATHE and DREAD the AC's approach, but that doesn't mean I don't play and try hard when I do play it. I kind of just want to get it OVER already. Though the family reunion this year was pushed back OUT of June, so I was looking forward to not having to potentially miss a few days of playing. I wonder if they tried to fix some of the stuff that people exploit to get mega-points, and then they found a serious flaw in it? Frankly, I don't see nor know how people COULD exploit something in the game. Since you kind of gotta be on-top of things in YYB. Anyway, it's kind of annoying that sign-ups have been suspended. Like I said, I'd like to just get it over with. ?

Now that I've actually played to All-Star and feel compelled not to miss it again, I'd be glad if AC were just henceforth cancelled.

It's a set named as an ethnic slur, though.  Since you can't type grape on the neopets chat boards, it really bothers me that they'd name a set after a derogatory term.

Edit, since it was pointed out to me.  I'm not upset at anyone here, just at the neopets team for being so careful to avoid anything that might be deemed offensive, yet naming something a slur.

The candy's done well in such a way that it reminds me of the striped, hard candies I really dislike. . . .

Personally, I think your best chance is to train Sam_Beckett53 to level 50 and get Lens Flare as fast as you possibly can. Being able to freeze for one turn will help you loads. After getting to level 50, I would switch your training over to strength to get him to 55 so you receive the next highest damage boost. If you're willing to invest in a Faerie Quest Fortune Cookie, that can help you a lot in raising his stats quickly. 
As far as weapons, it depends on what you have and what you're willing to spend. Yooyu Knuckle Dusters and Honey Potion are some good options that are relatively affordable. If you have the Thistleberry Pingrenade from this year's GMC, I would definitely use that. And the Corrosive Spear Wand, which was a plot prize a few weeks ago. At your HP, you can probably make do with a Lesser Healing Scroll. I've also seen people recommend much cheaper items like Scroll of Ultranova and battle muffins, but I don't use those so I can't attest to how well they work. I also don't usually need to use any shields, so I don't have much advice on that either. I've heard Leaf Shield and Parasol of Unfortunate Demise are good, though--and they're both buyable on the shop wiz. 
Once you have Lens Flare, use that on your first turn paired with your two best weapons to deal as much damage as possible while he's frozen. On the second turn, use your next-best faerie ability (An Icicle, probably) along with your one best weapon and your best defense or healing item to try and counter the damage you take. If you can stay alive through that second turn, then you should be good to go.

That's not weird.  I have a friend with a gallery section of moving images.

Neopets is so hard to quit!  I haven't ever actively tried to quit, but every time something draws me away for a hiatus, I end up back with a vengeance.  Best of luck with responsibility!  :)  Hopefully you won't miss Neo too terribly.
I really like petpets and petpetpets, which sounds fairly simple.  And weird as it is, I really like items with moving images.  :3
