linsta Posted December 19, 2011 Share Posted December 19, 2011 Hi, I'm Linsta and I just came back to Neopets after 7 years! I have barely drawn anything in the last 5 years and I've always wanted to get back into it, but I realized that I needed some kind of involvement in a community to motivate myself and make it more rewarding. Art school made me stop drawing I think (ironic, haha). So since it's almost the new year, I'm going to put down some goals I have in mind with making this thread! -------- Neopets history: I used to enter the Art Gallery regularly about 7 years ago. I deleted all my old neopets drawings so all I have left are what I could find through google of my work that's still in the AG. 1. Style evolution - I'm really going to work on changing my style, trying different styles, learning new programs, etc. Hopefully through this board, there will be a visible style evolution over time. 2. Keeping track of my art - I'm really bad about keeping track of my art ^^;. Since I use a few computers, it's never in one place, and then somehow it gets deleted.. etc. I used to draw a TON but I'd go on deleting sprees every few months when I looked back at how embarrassingly bad my art used to be. So this is another goal. no more deleting art! 3. Keeping myself motivated about art, meeting other artists, neopets players, etc. --------- TLDR: Here is my new art! Critiques are GREATLY appreciated. I am trying to become much much better! I need to catch up on 7 years of not drawing xD. I really enjoyed your picture with a frozen Water Draik encountering an Ice Draik the most, I'm taking that the Ice Draik thought that the frozen Water Draik was one of them, which me me laugh. (Unless I posted it in someone else's thread >.> but I can't find anything so I hope I'm safe). Anyways here is my Day of Giving entry. Sorry for the watermarks. I'll remove them if it ends up getting in. I took some WIP shots, since those are always cool to look at, if you're interested. WIPS: Also, I took the WIP shots to show you guys my process and steps. I am currently having a lot of trouble trying to paint without lineart. I feel like my process is very slow and tedious. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how to improve this process, or just cool ideas I could maybe try out and see what kind of effects I can get? I'm always trying to think of new techniques but the more brains the better! Full process: sketch (2) --> colour --> basic shade --> (sometimes add 2nd layer of gradient shading) --> darken edges, more shading maybe --> main highlights --> leftover details/additional coloured highlights. I think part of the problem I'm running into is the brush capability on photoshop. I don't normally use photoshop to paint (I use SAI, or OpenCanvas, trying to learn Painter too). I find the photoshop brushes don't really blend, but I'm sure I'm missing some kind of setting? I try to play around with the brush settings, but I can't seem to get what I want. It's just a bit frustrating because I like to try to blend different colours in so it looks more interesting, but the photoshop brush doesn't seem to do this (by blend I mean, it kind of takes up the colours around it). I for one would love to see your improvement :) How long does it take you to create one of these masterpieces? If I tried to do one it would take me hours and hours. btw there seem to be some stripes on the chocolate aisha's back in the sketch that disappear. I keep forgetting stuff D=. Umm these took me quite a while. I haven't really drawn with a tablet in a long long time so I'm getting used to it again. Also I'm using my 4x5 graphire3 instead of my 12x8 intuos4 and I found out I totally can't draw smooth lines in photoshop anymore ^^; The draik one probably took around 5 hours, so did the borovan one. The christmas one probably took a little bit longer, but I'm not sure because I was drawing it on and off all day and kept getting distracted because it grew tedious. I'm working on some more right now that's taking me a lot less time because I'm lazy. I kind of stopped drawing a long time ago because I wanted to draw better and more elaborate pictures, and it eventually ramped up so it was taking me 30+ hours and I never finished anything xD. I'll link my old entries that got in here but just be warned they're really bad xD. Waaay back I tried forever to get in the AG and found that neopets didn't like the usual stuff I drew, but that stuff that was more similar to their style would get in easily, so most of my AG pictures I didn't really put much effort into. Usually ~30min to 1.5hrs of work. I'm a bit embarrassed so this time I'm determined to have some good art get in. I want to improve a lot instead of just drawing solely to get in. Anyways, here they are. They're mostly signed by "boarder_lin" (my old frozen acc) but some of them were signed by my side accs. I guess this is why I got frozen, being too greedy. Anyways, here is some of my non-AG neopets art. I did a lot of draik requests from the draik clan (if anyone has heard of it or been a part of it). They're mostly draiks with really cool designs ^.^. Also, I wanted to post them because my AG work wasn't really representative of my art and style, while these are more like it. They were done at the same time as my old AG pictures, so yea, you can see there's a difference, and why I didn't LOVE drawing for the AG, but it was more of a thing to make some np because I don't know how else to make np xD. I spent more time on these than the AG pictures. It took me a long time to dig these up and try to figure out the dates, etc. Had to dig through past BC winners and such. 2004: (6) - The first 3 aren't neopets art, but I wanted to post them because the first 2 are my first attempts at digital art (with mouse), and the 3rd one is my first thing I ever drew with my tablet! I remember I was so excited when I got it that I drew for like 24 hours straight xD. Without tablet: First ever drawing with tablet: My old gelert fidelis_canis: My old lenny Inferniya: 2005: (7) (no real order) My draik InsomniacShadow (now InsomniusShadow, trying to get him back!) 2006: (11) Sadly a lot of my old art from 2003-2004 were deleted and gone forever. Ogrin day was announced while I was doing the lineart for this so I was not so motivated to finish it soon, but I figured I'd use it for some practice. Plus robot ogrins are super cool and quite a challenge to draw ^.^ Thanks to Leedom for inspiring/teaching me to add a texture. I thought I'd try it out and I really like it. I'll need to look for more cool textures to try =D Btw, I am considering doing a few requests :). Go ahead and request if you want.
