The following entry is a Game of Thrones themed entry, and since I'm only on season 4, I have no clue whether or not this entry contains spoilers for season 8,
but, seeing as I know how hard it is to avoid spoilers, I figured I'd put it in spoiler tags anyway, so you can decide for yourself if you want to view it or not.

Looks like we were sharing brain-waves because that's exactly how it was for me too, lol.

I think part of it for me was also that we don't have Ren Faires in this country so I was at a total loss even with Nielo's helpful link. The fun stuff about the food (and sunburn!) that @FreakyBowie and @strawbreathe used in their entries; stuff like that just isn't something I know about.

I was going to dress a pet as a beggar in the potato sack, and have them be sulky because they never got to wear the fancy costumes. This was as far as I got, lol.

To be honest, I would've been as lost as you were, @jellysundae, had this been a theme back when I still entered rounds. (It could've been, as it was on the list I got from Deb when I took over.) We don't have Renaissance Fairs over here either, and all I know about them, I've learned from random references on shows like How I Met Your Mother and Gilmore Girls. ?

We don`t really have those kinds of fair here either - we do have Viking markets/festivals every year, but that`s not the same.
I`m with Nielo though, I`ve picked up on the American version of that kind of fair from TV shows, haha.

It's funny how America celebrates European history and Europeans don't

I guess it was started by the Europeans who emigrated there and quickly became a tradition? And once something's a tradition it goes on being done WAY after anyone can remember why it started. >_<

Maybe it's much like how Boston in this country - which is just 20 minutes up the road from me - starting point of some of the Pilgrim fathers and all that, makes nothing of that? I mean there's stuff called Pilgrim all over: the hospital; the football team; various enterprises, but there's no commemorating of the emigrants with events.

WE gruesomely celebrate the thwarting of Guy Fawkes trying to assassinate the King by blowing up the Houses of Parliament in 1605, by setting stuffed effigies of him alight... See there's a tradition that the vast majority of people don't give one thought to the origin of, they just look forward to bonfires and fireworks on November 5th.

OH!! and here's a BIG and... once commerce gets hold of a tradition there's NO getting away from it, right?? Things like Ren Faires gotta be big money-spinners I'd have thought.

@jellysundae  Honestly Ren Faires are equally dorky and awesome. I go to this one every year.

Some highlights:

  • Amazing food-- I always get a giant turkey leg (I was sad there wasn't a handheld Neopets item of a drumstick/meat of some kind)
  • Tons of people dress up, and there are also lots of employees there that remain completely in-character
  • People can pay to throw tomatoes at a guy (just his head is sticking out of a cut-out in a wall), and as the thrower is trying to hit him, the guy throws out really clever insults based on his observations of that person
  • Every day of the fair has a full schedule of stage shows, jousting, falcon demonstrations, etc.
  • And then, yeah, the fact that inevitably you end up picking the hottest and sunniest day of the year to go, and end the day with heat exhaustion and a sunburn XD
